112. Out of the Storm

RAW ✔️ The Aranthian Succession – Cinderak Burning, p84

*kzzzz* the Emperor they're using the storm to attack, we've gotta warn *kzzzz*
- Last vox-communication from Scouting Team Epsilon 7

In this scenario, a gang attacks under the cover of an approaching dust storm.

Attacker and Defender

In this scenario, one gang is the attacker and the other is the defender. If this scenario is being played as part of a campaign then the gang that issued the challenge is the attacker; otherwise roll off with the winner deciding whether they will attack or defend.

BATTLE TYPE

This scenario is an Ash Wastes battle. Vehicles and Wargear that grant the Mounted condition can be included in both gangs' crew.

Battlefield

Designate one battlefield edge as the defender's edge, and the opposite edge as the storm front. The defender sets up walls and defences across the centre of the battlefield between their battlefield edge and the storm front. The rest of the battlefield is then set up using the Battlefield Set-up guidelines, as described in the Necromunda Rulebook. The area between the defences and the defender's battlefield edge should be set up as the outskirts of a settlement, with the rest of the battlefield as the ash wastes.

Crews

This scenario uses the standard rules for choosing a crew, as described in the Battlefield Set-up & Scenarios section of the Necromunda Rulebook. Both gangs use the Custom Selection (7) method to determine their crew.

Deployment

The defender deploys their crew anywhere between the defences and their battlefield edge. The attacker then deploys their crew between the storm front and the defences, at least 6" away from the defences.

Gang Tactics

Each player may choose two gang tactics from those available to their gang. If, during the pre-battle sequence, the total credits value of fighters in one player's starting crew is less than their opponent's, they may randomly determine one additional gang tactic for each full 100 credits of difference.

Ending the Battle

The battle ends when the storm front reaches the defender's battlefield edge.

Victory

The winner is whichever gang has the most Victory points; if both gangs are tied on Victory points then the result is a draw.

Rewards

Credits

The victorious gang adds D6x10 credits to their Stash. The losing gang adds D3x5 credits to their Stash.

If the battle ends in a draw then both gangs add D6x5 credits to their Stash.

Experience

Each model who took part in the battle earns 1 XP.

If a model takes an enemy Champion or Leader Out of Action, that model earns an additional 1 XP.

Reputation

The victorious gang gains D3 Reputation. If either gang bottled out, they lose 1 Reputation.

Home Turf Advantage

The defender has the Home Turf Advantage.

The Coming Storm

Place a marker on both sides of the battlefield along the storm front battlefield edge. At the start of each round, before rolling for Initiative, the storm front moves closer to the defender's battlefield edge – move the markers 6" closer to the defender's battlefield edge. The storm front is always a straight line drawn between the two markers.

Any models the storm front moves over, or that move past the storm front during their activation disappear into the storm; remove them from the battlefield (though they retain any Ready marker they have and still gain new Ready markers). When the model activates, make an Intelligence check for the model – if the check is passed they find their way out of the storm; place the model so that it is in base contact with the storm front then activate as normal. If the check is failed, they remain lost in the storm – remove their ready marker and check again the next time they activate.

Battle of Attrition

Each gang earns Victory points throughout the battle in the following ways:

  • Each Fighter taken Out of Action - 1 VP
  • Each Champion or Leader taken Out of Action - 1 VP
  • Each vehicle Wrecked - 2 VP

Fleeing the Battlefield

If either gang voluntarily bottles out and subsequently flees the battlefield, their opponent automatically wins the scenario.

note

Assault On Cinderak City

If players wish, they may use this scenario to represent the Ash Waste Nomads' assault of Cinderak City. In order to do this, make the following changes:

  • The defender should play with a mix of gangs as all are called to defend Cinderak City. Escher gangers on Cutters and Goliath Maulers are especially thematic.
  • The Devils in the Dust rule is in effect (see below).
  • The attacker should take an Ash Waste Nomads gang of equivalent gang rating.

Devils In The Dust

Attacking Ash Waste Nomads fighters automatically pass the Intelligence check to see if they find their way out of the storm.
